  • Thetford Recycling Center & Transfer Station

    Thetford residents wishing to use the Transfer Station, for trash or recycling, must purchase a permit (available at Town Hall). You can also mail a check with your request for a permit to the Town Hall, or drop it in the drop box at Town Hall. Trash service is provided by Quinttown Container Service. You may pay in cash or check at the Recycling Center each Saturday.

    Hartford Recycling & Waste Management Center

    All residents of the 12 member towns within our waste management district can use the Hartford facility with a valid permit or day pass (GUVSWMD and the Hartford transfer station are two separate waste management entities working in partnership). Certain materials that are not accepted at your local drop-off site may be accepted at the Hartford facility. To purchase a windshield permit sticker and/or punch card for the Hartford Recycling and Waste Management Center, visit your individual town clerk's office. For up-to-date information on services and fees, please contact the Hartford facility directly or visit their website.

  • Your Local Guide for Disposing Specific Materials

    Thetford Transfer Station accepts special items like 1lb propane tanks, corks, 4-pack carriers, aluminum pie plates, plastic bags. Additionally, items that are still functional and in good shape (tools, toys, books) can be left at the facility for others to pick up and use. No clothing, furniture, or broken items will be accepted, as the Town of Thetford must pay to dispose of anything that does not find a home.
    ✓ RECYCLING
    Glass/PGA, aluminum, paper, cardboard, #1, #2 & #5 plastic bottles.

    ✓ FOOD SCRAPS
    Accepted at the Thetford facility.

    X  ELECTRONICS
    Not accepted here. Bring to the Hartford Transfer Station.

    ✓ BATTERIES
    Most household batteries are accepted at the Thetford Transfer Station. Auto batteries can be brought to auto parts stores.

    ✓ BOOKS
    Use the Book Shed or recycle paperback books and hardbacks (once covers and binding are removed).

    X PAINT
    Not accepted here. Bring paint to Fogg’s, Oakes Brothers, Hartford Transfer Station, or Welch’s True Value.

    ✓ SCRAP METAL
    Accepted at the Thetford facility.

    ✓ LEAF + YARD DEBRIS
    Accepted at the Thetford facility.

    X  TIRES
    Not accepted here. Bring to the Hartford Transfer Station or Evergreen Recycling in WRJ.

    X  BULKY WASTE
    Not accepted here. Bring to Hartford Transfer Station.

    ✓ DEPOSIT BOTTLES + CANS
    Accepted at the Thetford facility.

    ✓  FLUORESCENT BULBS
    Accepted at the Thetford facility.​

    ✓ MERCURY THERMOSTATS
    Accepted at the Thetford facility.

    ✓ DONATED CLOTHING
    Accepted at the Thetford facility.

    Disposing Rx Medications:

    Flushing medications or tossing them in the trash is a danger to our waterways and wildlife! Vermont makes it easy to get rid of your unused medication. ​There are over 80 locations statewide including pharmacies, health care facilities, and police departments that host free and easy-to-use kiosks for medication disposal. More information about where/when you can drop of your medication and what type of medication is accepted can be found on the Vermont Department of Health's website.
