What is household trash?Proper collection, processing, and disposal of household trash are crucial for environmental protection and public health. Household trash can consist of a wide range of items such as food waste, packaging materials (paper, plastic, cardboard), glass, metal, textiles, and other discarded household goods. A significant portion of household trash, such as paper, plastic, and glass, can be recycled, reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills-- so please check with your local facilities and services to find the best options for disposing these items! Household trash typically excludes hazardous waste, construction and demolition debris, and industrial waste.

Find your town under "Town Services" for more information on where and when to bring your trash. All residents of GUVSWMD member towns may use the Hartford Transfer Station/Recycling Center. To purchase a windshield permit and or punch card for the Hartford Recycling and Waste Management Center, visit your individual town clerk's office, not the GUVSWMD office or the Town of Hartford town clerk's office.
Don’t forget! Burning trash is illegal in Vermont.BURNING TRASH COULD COST YOU A $500 FINE AND THE LOSS OF YOUR HUNTING AND FISHING LICENSE FOR 1 YEAR. Decades ago most trash consisted of paper, cardboard, and glass only. Today, manufacturers use a host of synthetics in packaging, most of which release carcinogenic toxins into the air and soil when burned. Please do your part to protect Vermont’s public and environmental health from toxins; talk to your neighbors about the dangers associated with burning trash. It is also illegal to bury trash, even on your own property, or dump, or deposit, it anywhere other than in a certified disposal facility.
